Travelling in Ireland

If you have a valid student card, carry it with you everywhere. Many transport providers offer discounts and special fares for students. In the Republic of Ireland, both Bus Éireann and Irish Rail provide reduced student prices when you present your student ID.

While trains are a great option, they don’t cover every part of the country. If you plan to explore more remote areas, buses are your best choice. Open Road bus passes give you unlimited travel across all Bus Éireann scheduled routes. Keep in mind that public transport services can be less frequent on weekends and bank holidays.

For solo travellers, a dedicated backpacking trip can be a fantastic way to meet new people. Ireland is generally safe for tourists, but solo hiking in unfamiliar areas is not recommended.

Travelling within Dublin has also become easier thanks to the Dublin Visitor Leap Card. This prepaid travel pass allows unlimited use of Dublin Buses, Airlink 747 buses, Luas trams, and DART trains for 72 hours (3 days) from activation. Simply tap your card on the Leap Card Validator when boarding and again when exiting — it’s that simple.

Exchange students can also take advantage of the Leap Student Card, available through language schools or directly from Dublin Bus. You can purchase cards valid from 1 week up to 4 weeks, giving you unlimited travel within the short hop zone using Luas, DART, Iarnród Éireann, and Dublin Bus.
