Protect yourself with Health Cover

Health Insurance for Non-EU Students in Ireland

If you’re a non-EU student planning to study in Ireland, it’s mandatory to have private health insurance. You can purchase a policy in your home country, but you must ensure it covers Ireland and any other destinations you plan to visit. Coverage options vary, so it’s important to carefully review your policy details. According to INIS regulations, if you bring insurance from your home country, it must provide at least €25,000 in hospital treatment coverage.

For a more straightforward option, students can purchase medical cost insurance from Study and Protect for around €160. This plan meets the Irish visa and arrival requirements for private health insurance and can be arranged before arriving in Ireland. Visit Study and Protect for more information.

Comprehensive health insurance is also offered by Ireland’s three main private providers: VHI, AVIVA, and Laya Healthcare. Keep in mind:

  • You will need an Irish address to apply.
  • AVIVA requires a PPS number.
  • Medical coverage with VHI or AVIVA usually starts right away, but many plans have a six-month “waiting period” before certain benefits apply.
