If you have recently completed your undergraduate studies at a university in Ireland, the Irish Government’s Third Level Graduate Scheme allows you to extend your stay for six months to secure employment. Once approved, you can renew your existing student permit for an additional six months from the date you receive your final exam results. This extension provides you with the opportunity to search for a job and apply for a Green Card (Critical Skills Employment Permit) or a standard work permit.
As a first-time graduate, you may be eligible for up to 24 months to find employment and apply for a work permit. While studying in Ireland, international students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and 40 hours per week during holidays. After graduating, students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) can apply for a six-month visa extension to seek full-time employment.
During this six-month period, you are allowed to work 40 hours per week without the need for a work permit. Afterward, you can pursue opportunities in sectors with skill shortages, such as IT, healthcare, and financial services. To remain in Ireland long-term, you will need to obtain a Green Card / Critical Skills Employment Permit or a work permit.
What is a Green Card (Critical Skills Employment Permit)?A Green Card, officially known as a Critical Skills Employment Permit, allows you to work for a specific employer in Ireland in roles where there is a shortage of qualified professionals. There is no requirement for a labour market test before applying. Both employers and employees can submit applications, but the applicant must possess the necessary qualifications, skills, or relevant work experience.
What is a Work Permit?A standard work permit is another pathway, but it is more competitive as it requires labour market testing. This means your potential employer must advertise the position and prove that no eligible candidates within Ireland can fill the role.
To qualify, the position must offer:
